Objective.

Combine type and imagery using Illustrator to create an 11x17” poster. Create typographic illustration and layout type, illustrate imagery to support the type. The type should be styled such that they are engaging, evocative and the letters express the meaning of the words via hue, saturation, value, textures, shape, volume and movement.

Solution.

For my poster design, I chose to use a play on the phrase, "I Need Some Space." This phrase usually refers to needing physical space - to be alone, but can also be read as "I need some space" referring to outer space. The purpose of this poster would be for decoration & enjoyment for all the introverted space lovers out there. The tone is playful and light to compliment the humorous nature of the phrase.

I want to convey a sense of movement and playfulness, so I chose a palette with fun, saturated colors. I composed the text in a way to highlight the message; "space" is decorated with stars and galaxies to relate to the concept of space. The word "space" also moves back and forth in-between space, to give the illusion that these letters are weightless and floating in space.

I constructed the word "some" out of clouds as if the rocket had flown through the clouds and wrote the word. “I Need” has a bold serif font to stand out from the playful curviness of the rest of the text, demonstrating the urgency one feels when one wants some space.

All text was illustrated by hand in Adobe Illustrator.
